Sagitec's donation of 10 computers is helping CAN DO assist even more individuals in need.

Sagitec Solutions recently donated 10 desktop computers to CAN DO, a non-profit organization that provides skills and employment training to people with disabilities in Chennai, India.  The computers, which are being used by individuals with hearing, visual, intellectual or motor disabilities, represents CAN DO’s first donation since launching in 2012, said the organization’s founder Anu Shekar.

“This contribution from Sagitec will help us reach out to a larger group of individuals in need and help us achieve our goal of providing skills and employability training to 100 people with disabilities by December 2016,” said Shekar.

CAN DO collaborates with various businesses that need certain tasks performed, such as data entry and telemarketing, and then trains people with disabilities to perform those tasks.

While companies are hiring people with disabilities, a vast employment gap still exists because of the sheer number of them living in India. According to the non-profit, there are 12-15 million visually challenged people in India, and 10-15 million have a hearing impairment.

“There is a 3 percent reservation on government jobs for people with disabilities, but the wait for these jobs is quite long,” said Shekar. “In the private sector many companies are open to hiring people with disabilities. However, since the number of people with disabilities is quite large, many of them are still unemployed.”  

The training and skills that CAN DO’s employees learn leads many to achieve great things. One former employee now works for a leading national bank in India and provides motivation and guidance to other trainees, said Shekar. Another employee managed a call center during the recent floods that ravaged Chennai and provided information to people who had to be rescued, said Shekar.
